Krampus tradition

The Krampus is a frightening figure in Alpine customs, which is particularly widespread in Austria, southern Germany and parts of Switzerland. Traditionally, the Krampus accompanies St Nicholas on 5 and 6 December and punishes naughty children, while St Nicholas rewards the good ones. The Krampus usually wears a frightening fur costume, a mask with horns and a rod.

Particularly impressive are the Krampus runs, where the Krampus parade through the streets and drive away the evil spirits with the sound of bells and wild dances. This tradition is deeply rooted in the Alpine region and symbolises the balance between good and evil during Advent.
